When you do not have a laser signal, the instrument cannot scan since it collects data based on fringe counting. If you open up the spectrometer and defeat the laser interlock, you can see either that the laser is not firing or that it is going to look very weak. Generally this is not something you can fix yourself. That business is now owned by Agilent. I would suspect that there is no one in the UK who knows what to do with that.
